Queenstown, situated in the central region of Singapore, is one of the earliest housing estates and the first satellite town built by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) in 1952. It was named after Queen Elizabeth II in commemoration of her coronation on 2 June 1953. Singapore had celebrated the significant event with other British colonies and the United Kingdom.
Subsequently, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) took over the project and Queenstown was completed after undergoing major developments in the 1960s as part of HDB’s first Five Year Building Programme.
Queenstown was a pioneer in many aspects. Apart from being the first satellite town in Singapore, many social institutions were first established here too, namely Queenstown Secondary Technical School and The Queenstown Community Library.
Queenstown used to be a swampy valley with two hills named Hong Lim and Hong Yin. On Hong Lim hill stood a cemetery for more than 100,000 Chinese graves. On the other hand, Hong Yin hill was covered with lush orchards and rubber plantations.
Queenstown also used to house a British military camp called Buller Camp at Alexandra Road. Over the years, the swamp, cemetery and lands were cleared to make way for the development of Queenstown housing estate.
